Monthly siren test scheduled today
The monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System, coordinated with the test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. today.
During this monthly test, all Statewide Outdoor Warning Sirens will sound a one-minute Attention Alert Signal (Steady Tone). A simultaneous test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System is conducted with the monthly siren sounding, in cooperation with Hawaii’s broadcast industry. There will be no exercise or drill accompanying the test.
The all-hazard Outdoor Siren Warning System for Public Safety is one part of Hawaii’s Statewide Alert &Warning System used to notify the public during emergencies. To report sire operation issues call Hawaii County Civil Defense at (808) 935-0031.
Transfer station service days change
The Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division, has altered service days at some of its facilities until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hawi and Keauhou transfer stations will be open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Hilo, Pahoa and Keaau will be open Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
“These closures are being taken as a precaution by the County of Hawaii in its ongoing efforts to address the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the community, and for the health and safety of employees and the public,” the county said in a prepared statement.

AARP offers free retirement workshops
AARP Hawaii is offering virtual retirement planning workshops on Saturday mornings starting Sept. 11 and continuing through Oct. 9.
The workshops are designed to get people to start thinking about and preparing for retirement. The first workshop will be on 1”0 Steps to Get Ready for Retirement,” followed by “Understanding Social Security” on Sept. 18, “Medicare Basics” on
Sept. 25, “Investing Basics” on Oct. 2, and “Investing for Retirement” on Oct. 9.
The webinars are free and offered as a public service; AARP membership is not required to attend.
